Windows 8 will not play DVD discs anymore, unless you pay for the Media
Center pack!

Oh dear oh dear - this sounds like something from the flatfish repertoire
from a few years ago about Linux, doesn't it?

If I'm reading it correctly, Windows 8 will do lots of things, but NOT play
DVDs (or live TV) UNLESS you buy the "Media Center pack" - but in that case,
only if you have the Pro version of the OS?

[aside - so if they can do that, why can't they do the same for the pre-
installed Windows OS itself - only pay if you use it?]

There is a way out, it appears:-

"Now, you can also opt to use third-party solutions software to play DVDs in
Windows, the most common solution will be getting a *free open source
application* like VLC and Media Player Classic among others"!!!

Come on guys - you've got to smile :-) :-)

Verily I say unto thee that bbgruff spake thusly:

The MPEG-LA racketeers strike again.

This poses quite a conundrum for the anti-freedom nuts. On the one hand
they must show loyalty to Microsoft, the industry's poster-child for
tyrannical business practices, but on the other hand they must also show
loyalty to racketeering organisations like the MPEG-LA, even when they
come into conflict with Microsoft.

Maybe they could just flip a coin.
