Windows Media starts & stops

My Windows Media player (v. 10) sometimes starts and stops automatically
while playing. e.g. it may start for 12 sec, stop for 12 sec, then continue,
etc. Could this be a paging file size (768 MB) issue, RAM size issue (512
MB), or what else?

Are the files on the primary hard drive... ?
Is it a laptop... ?
