Word 2010 reverting to Word 2007 on save

I am working Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010, and when I save a document as a "Word Document" using the "save as" button, it reverts it to a Word 2007 document, which will then only re-open in compatibility mode unless I go through the hassle of "open with". Is there any way I can make it save the documents as word 2010, it seems like it should do that automatically as thats what i'm using to write them in the first place!

Are you saying that both Word 2007 and 2010 are installed on the same
machine? In that case, they will naturally compete over the file
associations; to deal with that, see the "Hacking the Registry" section of
the article at http://www.gmayor.com/Toolbars_in_word_2007.htm.
