XANDROS 4.1: Linux is open to everyone

While the release of the new commercial operating system by Microsoft, Windows Vista, has been taking up a lot of news space since the start of the year, a number of other anticipated solutions like MAC OS Leopard are planned for release between now and June. As for multimedia, even if all formats are perfectly recognised, the proprietary Mpeg-2 format poses a problem. You will probably need to install the 32codecs package as well as the libdvdcss2 package so as to be able to support your protected DVD films.

To do this, edit the list of modules that are exclusive to Xandros Networks, then open the drop down window and select Set Applications Sources. You will then need to add the following lines:

deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org sarge main
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org experimental main

Besides just fixing this small detail, Xandros also makes it possible to deploy a number of dedicated multimedia applications, like software which allows you to edit and mix your favourite pieces of music, provide you with karaoke for your parties with friends and even manage your music collection so that you can synchronise with your iPod, receive streaming audio and even publish your own podcasts. We are a long way from the ease provided with Apple’s products, with their Garageband for example, but Xandros gives nothing away to Windows. This should help encourage users that are tired of Windows to migrate towards Linux without any pain or regrets.
